running without instrument cluster /generator light

Post by hal »

Hi,

I'm rebuilding my 90/6, losing the Pichler fairing and some more. The Pichler setup includes a square headlight and the wire nest are moved to a box where the instrument cluster normally sits, Instruments are mounted on the pichlers frame. Now, I have to sort out how to sort it all to a more original state. One of my options would be to run it without the instruments for a while till I get the mounting-bracket sorted out. I understand there is a problem with the chargin system running without the bulb? Could it be sorted with a lose bulb or even with a resistor? And how big should it be - how many watts are the bulb would answer that I guess..

Thanks!
Hal

In all it's glory, Snowbum discusses this here:

Just a little thought so you don't run into trouble:
A resistor WILL work, but the little lamp is for YOU to SEE if the rotor is really getting current and finally, if the charging is really happening when the lamp goes out when the engine runs fast enough.
You cannot tell any of that with only a resistor.

Two of my three Airheads have been "relieved" of much OEM instrumentation. I kept the GEN bulb on-line and also installed the in-line resistor harness. Sort of a "belt and suspenders" kinda guy. And, yes, the alternator will not charge your battery as the GEN bulb is part of the charging system's 'exciter' circuit.

The GEN light is an excellent diagnostic tool for charging problems. Encourage you to keep it... somewhere.
