Jean: Your theory on 5th gear wear and speed.

Post by Garnet »

You posted this on Jeff's trany rebuild thread:

" PS to ME109. Running 5th gear without being at high speed and RPM can eat up gears pretty fast. What RPM are you currently running at 160KPH?"

It has been rambling around my pee brain for a now while and I would like to hear more about it.

I have not been in an airhead gearbox, but my understanding is that all the gears turn at the same speed in relation to their partner on the next shaft (constant mesh). The only thing that changes speed in relation to it's neibour, with changing rpm and gear selection, are the shafts.

How will that affect the amount of oil picked up and carried to the 5th gear?

Thanks. :)

Garnet, your understanding is correct. Don't worry, be happy.

5th gear doesn't need any oil. DAHIK (It'll run fine until you try to down shift...)

"Pee brain"?

Well the answer is simple then. Just stay in 5th gear all the time, it should be fine since all the gears turn at the same speed all the time anyway.

It's called a "total-loss gearbox".
