Might you utilize a test lamp between the two terminals on the neutral switch? Tough to reach, for sure.

We found that those connectors could be removed and installed with a dentist's tool for pulling teeth. It is still tough.

Yep, they can, but the tool to use is a Magills forcep, which also works great if you're doing electrical work in the headlight.

Foerster sponge forceps are beefier and might be a good option. They'll do the headlight wiring to.

My '74 r90 had two wires on the box when I gor it but I still had to change the switch when I changed to a newer (still post '81) box. So I guess there where at least three different switches.

I don't think it's the switch in the gearbox, the paperclip thing should have worked with the neutral switch taken out of the equation,I've trawled the internet and as far as i can work out the diode has gone bad in the starter relay,I'll send for a new one and if it isn't the problem then I'll still have a spare relay.
Thanks for your replies.

Got the neutral light working,it was a two part fault,I switched out the starter relay which was the first fault and also there was a faulty earth at the switch at the gearbox.
This might help others if they have the same problem.
