Although you don't like the Avon tire, have you thought about using one only on the rear and getting something else you really like for the front. Since this is a "conversion", the mismatch may not be significant. I personally want a front tire I trust much more than a rear, but have always installed matched tires. Still, this case might be different, especially since you don't have too many other choices.

Seth, It's not that I'm unhappy with the Avons, it's that the design is a few years old now, and I'd like to try something new.
I have considered just trying a different front as there are lot of choices in a 100/90-18 front. The bike is well balanced now and I'd hate to mess that up.

you're only considering fixing it because it ain't broke? I believe there is some popular advice about such behavior.
