rally field events how to...

Post by Matt »

soo. I said something silly like "um maybe I'll volunteer to coordinate field events at the GA Mtn Rally next year"...this year.
I just glanced on line & didn't immediately see any comprehensive field events "guide" or ANY info actually on how to host such an event.

I've seen some pretty good field events and I've seen some pretty lame field events in my time. I've participated and I've won a couple events in my day.I've never hosted field events. I have a pretty good idea about how & what, I just want I just want to bone up on how its done & make a few changes & then do it my way...I want to host a field event that they'll be talking about till the next year.

One thing, I've seen some boring field events, some field events people don't even spectate. FAIL.
another, I've seen field events where not one person can successfully complete some events. FAIL.
and I've seen field events where everyone could finish the events & nobody could be declared winners. FAIL.

I want to avoid these kind of snafu's & have field events that more than just a few field event hounds will participate in and yet make it challenging enough that you can narrow it down and make it easy to declare winners. I also want to be able to make it equally challenging to all bikes and riders no matter how big or small or skilled or otherwise.

I like the GS Challenge process of elimination with a progression of difficulty eliminating riders till a winner is declared. another idea i have is provide a demo, a control, a ringer who can do everything who doesn't compete, just makes it look easy & hopefully inspire more riders to go for it.

So for starters what are the top 10 field events?
solo, 2 up events, sidecars?

anyone have any input on this subject?
thanks,
Matt

I always thought the "Slow Drag" looked kinda fun, you know, see who can complete the distance in the longest time.

I won a weenie bite event back in the '80s...the DRIVER had to do the biting!!
And not put feet (or foot) down.
It was all smeared with mustard, too. Yeech.

Ok, I'm intrigued. What the hell is a Weenie Bite Event?
I know a weenie is one of them pink things they put in hot dogs. We call 'em 'frankfurts' or 'little boys' here and I think they are made of pig's nostrils, scrota, ears, industrial strength preservatives and so on. They taste awful. Why would anyone want to bite one? If you have to bite one in an event, can you spit it out again? Perhaps they taste different to americans.
