I have an 89 R100RT and I am planning on installing an aftermarket windshield and a new bottom gasket. I have removed the parking light and the glass headlight cover and rubber surround in an attempt to remove the two inside M5 nuts that hold in the bracket that holds the bottom of the stock windshield in place. Can anyone advise if there is a secret to getting tools on those two nuts without having to remove the headlight or the majority of the front fairing!
Surely something this basic can be done without disassembling a bunch of stuff.
Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Removing a Windshield on 89 R100RT
Re: Removing a Windshield on 89 R100RT
Just found the answer..... a very small ratchet handle, a 3" extension with a small 8mm socket... someone with small hands and lots and lots of patience.... German Engineering... Whoa!!!! could have used just a couple plastic panel pop ins... Now will need to see if I can get it back together.

Re: Removing a Windshield on 89 R100RT
I just did mine and it's easy if you remove the top triple cover (loosen 2 screws), the tach / speedo cluster (loosen 3 bolts), then you can use a long extension and 8m socket.
I even chisled out the rivets and removed the dash with the clock and voltmeter and put in blind nuts and used button heads to reassemble so I could see how it's assembled.
Now comes the downer - no matter what I try it seems impossible to put the gasket nubs back into the windshield - you can't do it with the windshield off and there's simply no room with the windshield in installed to access them to pull them through.
The only solution I've seen so far and I'm going to do this next is the Parabelum windshield. It has a 'cap' that covers the entire stock fairing top and mounts the windshield in a different way than stock. Rod

Iskbike, the same person who designed (?) that windshield mounting designed the electronics/relay panel in Jettas.
I got first dibs on tearing his ears off and breaking his fingers.

More on the RT windshield...
It's been a LONG time...Best I recall, we(takes 2 if you want to keep the windshield nice) used a 1/4 drive ratchet, some short extensions with a universal joint and finally the correct size socket.
Mu hands are small compared to the average guy, so that might have made the difference.
It was an earlier RT, too. An '82 if I remember correctly, but it's long gone now.
Finally....It was a terrible job. I wished I'd never offered to help. Putting it back together seemed to take twice as long.
I think we had to unfasten the instrument panel, too.
