tire selection
tire selection
Hate to start a tire thread but here goes: I have a 1985 R80 with Avons front and rear. Th rear needs to be replaced. It is an Avon Roadrunner AM21 120/90 H18 which apparently is no longer available. Would an Avon Roadrider 120/90-18 M/C 65V be a proper replacement? I would like to stay with the same brand front and rear. Thanks.

Re: tire selection
You forgot the most important piece of information, your riding style. How will you ride it and what do you expect? Ride in the rain, or care about rain grooves?

Re: tire selection
Your Roadrunners must be pretty old. I went from those on my Triumph to the Roadriders and don't notice any difference.

Re: tire selection
Actually the bike belongs to a friend of mine. No hard riding and not much rain riding unless caught in it.
Re: tire selection
I thought I liked roadrunners, but I ended up thinking they were too expensive and didn't last long enough. I have been using bridgestone spitfires or something like that for a while. I don't think I can ride this bike hard enough to exceed the performance envelope of the spitfires.
Re: tire selection
+1 on the Spitfires. Excellent performance and wear plus decent pricing.

Re: tire selection
I don't think the Avons are any better than Spitfires. I just like the words "Made in England" on my Triumph's tires. OK so I know that's not an adequate reason. Oh: The Roadriders come in the correct sizes for your bike: 4.00 x 18 rear and 3.25 x 19 front. They don't have a 3.25 x 18 for the front of my R65. But neither does anybody else, as far as I know.
I resisted typing AFAIK to be nice to Ken. And because I type fast.
