I had a rough winter with a pinched nerve in my neck. As I'm heading off for a long ride, I decided to give up using my modular helmet in order to get a much lighter lid. I love modular (flip up) helmets for many reasons. I've been using them ever since BMW came out with the System One, that's a long time. But I really wanted lighter to avoid stress on my much improved neck. Yesterday I bought a Kaos Ether Carbon Fiber helmet. It passes the Euro standard (ECE) like the Shuberth C3 for safety and is incredibly light. My XL weighs less than 1200grams. My HJC modular weighs in @1777grams which is quite light for a XXXL. As far as I am concerned sizing for helmets is in no way standardized. When wearing the Kaos it feels like I'm not even wearing a helmet. I've never experienced anything like it. It makes shoulder checking easier and is just more comfortable to wear for long periods of time. Helmets like the Shoei Neo tech feel like heavy tanks as does the Shuberth C3 when compared with the Kaos. I'm hoping they will make modular helmet this light soon!

I was hoping to find the Lazer Monaco Carbon but I was unable to get one. There is no distribution in Canada and very little in the USA. It is still quite a bit heavier in XL but seems to be the lightest modular on the market. Just not available at this time.

I'm hooked on modular, and I can see why you like the Lazer Monaco. It has the pinlock system (double glazing) too, a feature I love in my Nolan modular.

I'd say the Kaos is more quiet than my HJC flip up.

Neither the Kaos or the Lazer are super quiet. Lazer says that lightness was the most important consideration, and touring riders will use earplugs of buds. I always have my ears plugged when I ride. I believe it improves noise to signal, and I can hear what I really need to hear better.

That is incredibly inexpensive for a carbon fiber helmet.

My wife has neck issues which has led to her riding far less. I'm definitely going to investigate whether this helmet fits her.

It's quite a relief on the neck. This Kaos helmet may not be available in the States. If you want I could get the dealer here send you one. It's not an Shoei in build quality, but it feels like a big relief when riding.

Thanks, but I'll investigate availability here first. I'll keep your offer in mind, but, of course, I'd really like her to be able to try it on first. She's not as oval as me, but she found her Shoei to be just a bit too short front to back. I can't wear Shoei's at all. Arai and KBC both fit great, strangely enough: one of the cheapest and about the most expensive.

I am heading down under this weekend! I hardly can wait. Arriving in Sydney for a few days, then Adelaide & Kangaroo Island (by bus/ferry), then north to the Kimberley and then east to Darwin and Cairns. Really a great fast trip with my wife's new client Wilderness Australia. I look forward to checking out the lay of the land...hopefully as a scouting trip for a projected airhead ship and trip within the next year.

I am spooked about riding on two wheels as i very well might eat some asphalt and chrome bumper since you folks ride on the other side of the road. I will know my metal after a few days there. I am planning on picking up a rented scooter in Adelaide for a small wine country spin. Hoping to catch up with a few of you if that works. Please know I will buy the first bin of chips and local brew. I am serious about the next import/ride and have a terrific plan to pull together for many of us dedicated airhead riders on both sides of this grand puddle.
