Clutch Cable - SNAP!!

Post by grant81rs »

Well that was fun ride on the Beemer, but not as long as I had hoped though!!

Image

Today I left around 8.30 to ride up north and meet up with Jeff and Charlie at a lovely little town called Mansfield, grab some lunch at a pub then sit around and talk some gentlemen's bullshit while we wait for SteveD to decend down from the high-plains and mountains after his weekend ride up in amoungst white tops, then I would ride back down to melbounre with SteveD then head east home.

ANYWAY!!

Mansfield for lunch as planed it was not, but just over the famous "Black Spur" road just north of the busy touristy town of Healesville and I snap a clutch cable pulling up and out of a sweeping right hander... Oh shit!!

With little traffic in front or behind me, I had time to slow down and gather my thoughts about what to do, do I ride on? ok but where out here? do I stop? oh and btw I stupidly did not have a spare cable on board and tbh this has never happened to me before on a bike but I had practised on my other beemer changing gears without a clutch, easy changing up, harder changing down...

Fuel was just in my favour to get me home as the was 140kms out so 300kms is refill time and I could not stop for fuel because I would not get it going again without doing some damage to the gearbox, not an option..
I decided to turn around and head back to Healesville and take my chances on the busy main street on a Sunday morning and three sets of traffic lights, then three other stop intersections at Launching Place and Yarra Glen then once through these home via Poweltown, Neerim South etc, an easy run to home it would be

Image

All went well except for one traffic light on red as the bike stalled because I was in 4th with pressure on the rear brake pedal to slow and hold me back without changing but luckily it was on a hill so I just pushed it off and clicked it into 1st and she fired up quickly..

Yes that was an interesting lesson today in finding the sweetbox in a gearbox and I think a gearbox oil change will be happening asap..
Cheers, Grant

We need to co-ordinate our social calendars. I rode down for lunch in Mansfield last weekend.

Bad business the broken clutch cable but at least you got home. Where do you draw the line at what spares to carry, especially when you're not going all that far from home? I carry a few odds and ends and have never used any of them, but some people seem to carry a fairly well stocked spare-parts shop with them.

When it comes to clutch cable, the general idea is to have a 2nd routed parallel but with the ends covered to keep it clean.

Sounds like a lot of mess when all you have to do is inspect and grease the ends once a year.

Barrels got to rotate in order not to break easily.

Onya Grant. Shame about the lunch but you made it home without needing a tow-truck.
Thats a good test of your riding skills on a big machine like that.

Bummer Grant.
I managed to meet Charlie & Jeff at Whitfield. They were just about to leave as we rolled in.

In 2007 I added one of these to my 79 R65 and my 75 R90/6.

The device has worked very well and cuts the stress on your hand and clutch cable in half.

I have not had any problems with the two that I have.

But you still look at and perhaps lubricate the barrels every once in a while?

My first thought was that putting oil on anything underneath an Airhead is redundant. The truth is, I have never done anything to these except when I had to pull the transmissions for Spline Maintainence. They are showing a little rust, but don't look like they are near failure.

A chain oiler would sort those out. http://www.scottoiler.com/us/Kits/Scott ... ystem.html

I think redirecting one of the many oil leaks under these things would cost me less than the $279 oiler. Or I can ignore them for another 10 years.
