I think I figured it out: The clamp normally would have an extension piece spot welded to the clamp in order to maintain clamping pressure in the area not covered between the screw and threaded attached nut. The spot weld mark is there, but the piece is gone. I've attached the thin tapered end of a zip tie to cover that distance and it seems to be dry so far. I will order some new clamps. I wonder if a zip tie alone, could be tightened enough to seal the boot.

You lost your clamp extension. Mine's been loose for twenty years. It requires a special technique to get the little bastard back in when tightening the clamp.

That'll be your leak.

I had never seen a clamp come apart. I never would have suspected that.

Yea I lost the extension. Trying to order new clamps from the stealer.
