Also check the pistons to make sure they are round and in good shape.

You'll also need to buy rings compatible with the plated cylinder bores.

One advantage to the plated cylinders is they won't rust again like yours did.

• Rings will be an additional $100
• Top end gaskets are ~$80
• Battery $100
• Carb rebuild kits $100
• Front brake rebuild kits and hoses $100
• Your photo does not show a seat ($150-300)
• You may have additional unseen engine damage
• Don't forget tag and insurance
• Don't forget helmets and safety clothing

Granted this is the best BMW model ever built, but... You have no history with this bike. You don't know if you'll even like it. The bike needs an additional $400-$500 to be road worthy. And yet you are choosing to initiate the first of numerous repairs with the most expensive repair option.

Are you sure you have thought this all the way through ?

You are about right with your price quotes.
+ add a bunch of water in the transmission. Cleaned out the gunk. Replaced the bearings/seals.

I think you misunderstand my history. I got it in 1987 and rode it fairly regularly till 2004.

I went with honing/new rings.
