I usually only wear earplugs, but have started to experiment with music a bit. So far only short distances.

I simply velcro a I pod shuffle on the side of my helmet and get great sound. Really can improve a long day in the saddle.

I listen to stuff if I've got a long boring ride, such as slabbing it for long distances to get to an MOA rally or something. In the past I've used Etymotic ER6i in-ear phones, although I have narrow ear canals and had to rim one flange off the smallest rubber piece to make them fit (they came with a few sizes of rubber outer-pieces so that most anybody can get a good fit). Originally I plugged them into a Zoom Labs 64GB MP3 player, but now with a smartphone I can carry just as much music in a lighter, less-bulky package.
And now that there is a Mrs. Veg who likes to ride with me, I'm contemplating getting a set of helmet communicators- which of course can get audio input via Bluetooth. I have heard that the slim speakers that many come with, which you mount inside the helmet, sound good even through earplugs. We'll see about that. In any case, I'm going to the MOA rally in Des Moines next month and that means a couple of roasting-hot days each way on the StoopidSlab. Some music or podcasts will be welcome.
