Hi Rob.

I assumed this was correct as I installed it in the way I removed it.

Please educate me on how to set the timing? I don't have a timing light though.

I see in the manual that I need to rotate the distributer counter or clockwise to advance and retard respectively. What position is static. In the middle of the slotted area?

Try this...
Basic static timing.

If you don't have a suitable timing light, initial timing can be done as follows:
• loosen the two screws holding the 'bean can'.
• set the engine to point where the timing mark is aligned.
• remove the plugs and connect them to the HT leads then ground the plug bodies so you can see the spark.
• switch on the ignition, don't start the bike.
• turn the 'bean can' gently in its housing till you see the spark stopping immediately you see it.
• tighten the 'bean can' screws.
This sets the timing adequately to achieve engine start.
The final setting should be done using a strobe.
