Some V-twins have a "knife & fork" con-rod big ends, which allow the cylinders to be inline.

The riders footrests are also offset by about the same amount. What I find surprising is how many times you talk to people who've owned airheads for years but have never noticed... and those who post on the forum to ask 'what's wrong with my bike' when they do notice...

I enjoyed the funky difference, myself!

The pillion foot pegs on my /7 are within a whisker of being in line with each other. However on my R69S, the offset is clear on the rear foot pegs.

And some of us have modded the pegs to line up! I found the offset to be disturbing, but I'm a goofy-foot surfer. Regular-foot surfers (the great majority of people--like right-handedness) are the ones who don't notice.

If anyone has some spare /5 /6 /7 right pegs, send me a PM. I have a couple more Airheads to do this fix on.

I had thought foot surfing was *always* a left-foot-surf thing so your right foot could stay on the brake as needed? At least this is what natural assumption I came to lead me to believe.

I think you'll find that the pillion footrests (where fitted) are pretty much in line on most 247 series airheads, it's the riders pegs that are offset. Not a problem, nowhere is it written that the riders footpegs must be in line and I have to say that, on a day to day basis, it makes no difference at all. A lot, probably most, riders ride a bit skewiff anyway.

OK, Rob...I was just commenting on your statement that "The riders footrests are also offset...". For some reason, I took that to mean the rear footrests.
