My 81 has a wire and clip type connector, I'm not sure what year the threaded adjuster was introduced.
I had a 1983 RS that had the wire connector.
The 2 1981 and my current 11/1981 bike all had the newer, adjustable setup. Possible retro fits? The adjustable one I use now is nice and sturdy. I bought it via ebay from Justin B (I think it was) who once posted here. KinO has contact with him still I believe.

I will get a threaded type linkage in the not too distant future. The wire type has served well, but it would be nice to fine tune the lever.
Munich have them for 65 dollarinis.
might have a looky see at Motobins.

Hmmm, motobins got em for 14.75 pounds... nice.

I haven't looked at motobins for a while........had to stop......I was getting aroused...
oooh, perhaps one more look.....ooh, gotta stop.

I have been using Motobins for a couple of years now. Good prices and fairly quick shiipping.

Here is the image of what Munich MCs offer. Not sure if it is OEM or aftermarket.

I've bought one for my RS and works a treat.

That is the same as mine, except that one of the ball ends on mine is permanently attached to the gearbox arm.
Not a big deal to remove it If I want to replace the whole unit.

The answer is that both types are stock. The original ball type linkage had two threaded balls and cold be fitted to the earlier 'wire' type gear lever. Later gear levers have the rivetted type ball. AFAIK, they are interchangeable.

Thanks Rob. I haven't tried, but they certainly look interchangeable.

Hi All, You should be able to buy the spherical ends at a bearing factor and you might find them at peformance auto shop for gear linkages etc or indeed on Flea Bay. I did do some searching for stainless ones and bought some cheap from a Flea Bay 'Shop' but they turned out to be the normal plated ones!

A quote from a R65 forum member:
"When I put "stainless shift linkage" into google image about half of the results linked to Harley parts. If you want something more "chromey/blingy you could just go to your local dealer but that would likely exceed the "40 dollar" point considerably. Otherwise, just about any motorcycle parts desk can sell you a very nice inexpensive ball/socket shift linkage... it's a very common part. That is if you're lucky enough to find anyone working the parts counter with the extra ounce of initiative/brains it requires to find something on the shelf without a part number to go by. GOD that drives me nuts.

My "coathanger" rod broke at 12,000 mi. When I discovered the flimsy little rod under the boot I felt a mild rage well up at the back of my head. I've been wrenching various bikes for many years and that's by far the flimsiest linkage I'd ever seen. And this, on a BMW!!

If no luck at the cycle dealership (any brand will do) ust go to any "bearing supply" vendor and get a pair of stainless steel ball/socket ends with female threads and a short length of stainless threaded rod. Sure to be less expensive than the OEM. Should fit right under the rubber boot. I just left my boot off entirely.

And from Justin, in the same thread: "I use 1/4" rod stock for the linkage which is a bit heavier than the 6mm on the factory adjustable unit."
