I' sure they are regulated. But tourism is a big part of their economy. Still prophylactic application of a detector seems prudent.

It has been almost 30 years since I have driven in Europe so I can't comment there.
I was in England last summer as well as in 05. They enforce speed limits when and where they need to, at dangerous roundabouts and entering towns. They don't enforce the speed limits out in the country just because there it a nice tree or fence to hide behind.
They use speed camaras (photo radar) accompanied with a huge sign showing it's location. EVERYONE slows down because there is a good reason just over the hill or around the bend. After you are past the obvoius cause for caution you can resume your pace.
It is a very sensible system, but people tend to drive much more sensibly and quickly.

For the twisties in Europe / UK, I would want a good 250 like -
this

Just take keys, cash, and underwear

The 800r would be close to perfect. Tractable, handles, good brakes. You'll need the get up and go in the hills, where the 250 would just scream all day, and you'd be frustrated.
I doubt you'd be doing touring distances, so the longer comfort issues are moot, especially as your arse should be hanging off the seat mostly anyhow!
If you're too tall, then maybe not.

I'll be climbing a lot of steep, over the tree line roads. A 250 wouldn't have the legs, or the legroom I require.

I'll just have a a tank bag and a small gear bag. I've done so much camping, roughing it, hostels, ect. Just this once, I'm going to let somebody carry my stuff, and it will be in my private room by 6:30. No stopping early to look for accommodations! And I know the food is going to be great.
