Yikes! I've done one of these before. That's a lot of work to get to one little pin. It's interesting how the rear bearing doesn't require one. There are probably a lot of bikes running around without it. Ticking time bombs.

If the front bearing rotates, oil feed to the top end is blocked. The rear can move a little without consequences.

There was a change in the block in the late 80s and only the late bikes are affeted. Not sure of my years.
