Dougie, not sure, but it may be different for the RS...#1 below is US$679. Jeff, I'm getting a loom made by a local vintage wiring bloke. His brother is the guy on the K1200s that comes on the mountain rides with me. If you need a particular section, let me know and I can ask him.

Steve - that #1 you are reffering to is the main wiring harness.
I think what Jeff needs is BMW # 61111243646. MaxBMW lists it at $45.48 USD.

Thanks for the loom links gents.

The high and low beam wires look ok, however the earth wire looks like it has overheated near where it connects to the headlight.
I chased those three wires back to where they disappear into a time warp with lots of other wires
Today I will make a better assessment of the situation. I may just need a new plug to connect to the headlight and trim/repair that earth wire.

Does your hi/lo switch have an intermediate spot that allows you to have both filaments burning at once? Many motorcycle headlight dimmer switches are like that. If you ran with both filaments burning for long, I could see that overwhelming the ground wire.

I always opt for the do-it-yourself (cheap) method myself, when possible.

Good point Major, I just used a test light to check but couldn't get both high and low to operate at once.
There is a headlight relay in the bucket, I'm not sure if that is oe or not on an 81.
The driving light is on its own power circuit with a relay switched by the high beam wire in the bucket so I can't see it causing problems.
Today I'll see if any of the auto electrical stores in town have an H4 socket.
Vibration over the years may have caused the earth wire to break a few strands which would exacerbate the problem.
