I had the big ground wire break at the battery lug. The wire is really stiff, so it would make intermittent contact and let the instruments lights work, but when I tried the starter, nothing happened. The high current demanded by the starter made an arc and the joint would open. ("pop").
It took me a LONG time to discover this, as it seemed to weld itself back together enough to let me find 12+ volts whenever I attempted to trace the circuits with my voltmeter.
AND the same thing happened to someone else at the Knobbies Rally last year about this time...But I was there and mentioned this, and we fixed it right away!

Hi,
Another anecdotal suggestion...
Some years ago, I had a R45. for some months it had a problem in that I would be riding along quite normally when the charge lamp would come on and the bike would suddenly cut out. I would then coast to a halt and nothing. No idiot lights, no vehicle lights, nothing at all. After a few minutes fiddling the lights would come back on and she'd start good as gold.
There would be no more problems until the next time, which might be a day or a month later.
I checked every wire, component and connection on the thing to no avail, diagnosis being hindered by the fact that I could never duplicate the problem in the workshop. Gradually the failures got more frequent and, to cut a very long story short, I eventually tracked the problem to a broken main feed wire in the loom. This occured at the point where the loom flexes between the frame and the steering assembly. The conductor had failed but was making contact most of the time until vibration and movement of the steering caused the two broken ends to move apart then nothing until further movement brought them back together again.
Had me

Since you've all been replying I'll update:
The battery was cracked and part of the problem but I also discovered that the wire to one of the horns had come loose and had made contact w/ the frame and or tank.
I actually deleted that horn (1 of 2) and the wire, problem gone. Regrettably, I've not ridden much this summer & most of my two wheel time was pedaling(which was a goal) but man, the times I have been out were just great!!
