Why would you want to go without them? Aren't they there for a purpose... to help clamp the controls to the bars?
Without 'em, you have what's called...

Not always.
I've seen a few perches that have no groove for one.

1975 /6, it was. I'm not completely understanding how the groove and wedge come and go on these things. Did they try wedgeless in the 70s and not have a good experience with it? OP's bike is from the 80s, and he needs wedges.
Call me Mel. Some years ago- never mind how long precisely- having little or no money in my purse, and nothing particular to interest me at home, I thought I would ride about a little and see the other parts of the world.

Poorly worded by me. I use them. I meant I wised up about holding my hand under the handlebar to catch the wedge when I remove the perch.

I learned about the perch wedge -after- the first time I pulled the left control off the bars. Wondered why the heck it wouldn't tighten back down (the little pw vanished!). Scratched my head a while with that until a going-over on a fliche.
Ahh-ha.

Way to nail him, lomax. We get so many requests that forget to mention that vital information, that, when we miss it ourselves, we seldom have the presence of mind to go back and make certain it wasn't there. After all, people forget it all the time, right? So, it must have been missing. ;-)

Well it all went back together just fine and both sides are good and tight. The left clutch side had the wedge in it and the groove for it, The right throttle side did not. An no I did not drop that one.

So I guess some perches have them and some do not. Kind of strange to me but what the heck, Airheads are fun.

Thank you all for the most valuable information as I would have been sunk without it.

I was also going to put risers on it but gave up on those. I either got the wrong ones (advertised for a 83 R80RT) or there is just some difference between the bikes. The risers did not come back far enough and the steering damper rod would have hit the bars as they passed through the clamps.

Oh well, live and learn.

A lot of people do away with the steering damper all together. With the front end properly set up, you shouldn't need it. So, go fish those risers out of the trash and have a re-think. Its your back.

Don't bother trying to make one, as the original is hardened. It must grip the chrome and it is hard. Mild steel won't touch the chrome. Besides, they are only $10. Yes, you need two.

What year/model perch didn't have the groove? Never saw one in my day, but later bikes could be anything.
