Thanks for that pdf George.
Just found the casting date on the front
Snowflake and it is 5/88 so the replacement
has been carried out.

Hi Jean,
No, I didn't get shot at.
The circumstances were as follows.
My brother had to deliver some parts
to an engineering company for repair.
He was talking to the owner (who we know)
as I went to high school with him and his wife
about 40 years ago. I was working in Central
Australia at the time and only returned home
a month ago.
Somehow the subject of bikes came and he mentioned to Jack
that I was looking another BMW to play with.
He happened to have one in the shed that he hadn't used
in some time. Anyway he went and checked it out
told me its problems and told me what it was really worth.
My brother rides Harleys but he does know his bikes.
After I got home we went and saw Jack , got it started,
made him an offer, negotiated a bit and it came home
in a trailer.
In another twist I sold him my Yamaha XS650 all those years
ago and two years later bought it back from him.
Now he's getting me back for that.
Sounds like Days of Our Lives!!

Re: 1981 R100RS
If your loom needs a replacement, they're now nla unfortunately. BM Workshop sold one a while back for less than $300 as nos. I'm getting one made for my bike, by a vintage car wiring loom maker. The problem is getting the plug from the rear of the instruments...also nla. Afaik the only source is an old loom.
I have a set of ss mufflers if you're interested...Keihan, UK version of Staintune. However, recently there's been a thread on mufflers that you may find interesting as it covers quite a few options including tuning.
Great find by the way.

Re: 1981 R100RS
I don't recall mention of the wiring needing replacement.
Our 77RS (s) is OK in the wiring dept. Since the bike's been stored inside, and if no obvious overloads have caused the insulation to char, it's probably OK. I'd check for rubbing on the frame at the usual locations...
I just love it when a casual remark results in such a great outcome!!

Nice find.kutter wrote:Krauser Panniers - No keys - Difficult or impossible (and Expensive) to find.
I also have a 84 R100RS and it had no keys for the bags. I went to the BMW dealer and they ordered them up out of Germany. It took a couple of weeks and I think the keys were about $6 a piece, but I now have keys.
And When you do the de-corroding of the engine cases I would very much like to know how you do it. I had a R75/5 once and tried several things. I did not want to take it all apart so bead blasting was out of the question. I thought about soda blasting but thought that would be a big mess. The best thing I found was Dry Ice blasting but could not find anyone who had the equipment.
Long live the RS

Hello All,
Yes I am also open to suggestions re the removal of the white corrosion.
A lot of members of this forum have undoubtedly done this before.
I did spray a part of the crankcase with WD40 and the corrosion dissolved
but you would need to use a soft wire brush and then some type of
buffing compound?
Current state of dis-assembly.

On another motorcycle forum someone had contacted Mr Krauser and they
had some of the keys available at something like 32 Euros each.(S150 etc)
From what I've been told the Krauser Panniers (1981) and the later ones (1985)
have the habit of either opening up and/or jumping off the bike while in use.
Some of the later keys (040 and 046 etc) are available from suppliers in the UK.
But not all apparently and these are about 9GBP each.
This is my solution to the case coming open - does not use a strap.
If you want to lock it use a small padlock. Locks only stop honest people anyway.

This is my solution to the pannier leaving the rack.
There is also another angle behind the rack on the top of the case.
Doesn't take long to remove but longer to fit the top angle piece
as you are working between the seat and rear wheel.
Aluminium angle held on with SS 5mm Button heads and SS Wingnuts
inside the case.
