I would never bother with that measurement, as it is way too slow. I can't believe that so much is made of adjusting the clutch. It is a really simple procedure.

My clutch adjustment is based on ease of shifting from first to neutral at a red light.
I shift from first to neutral at red lights when I need to get my hands lower than my axles to drain all the pins and needles out.

Perhaps 203mm is a disguised Englishmans/Americanmans thing. It's awfully close to plain 'ol 8"

More likely to be a German thing really......if is was an English American instruction it would be 8 inches and 1/64th, or something similar and easy to understand.

There are various things that adversely affect the gear change on these bikes, especially now that there is wear up and down the clutch operating system, I struggled to get a decent gear change on my light flywheel bike, until I used the 201-203mm technique and it really transformed the gear change.

I understand that this method is now recommended for use on the heaven flywheel bikes as well.

Now I'm just going to have to have a look at my 203mm crutch measutrement! Not that one!, my eight and 1/64th" measurement.
My RS now has an adjustable linkage on the gear shift, and a new pivot bolt and bush. Ooooooooh, been dreaming of that for a while. Much mo precise changes.

I found a link to a copy of the /6 riders handbook, with instructions on how to adjust the clutch

Would that same procedure, from the /6 handbook, apply to newer airheads - say an '87 R80RT?

Manfred,

No,

That is the old procedure which for all airheads has been superseede by the 201-203mm procedure.

IMHO etc etc

Very good. I shall study the 201-203mm procedure.

That picture is of the bottom, so it is (embarrasingly) showing the right side clutch option.
