I think that it helps to understand the history of BMW. In the /2 days it was a sidecar bike. In order to recover from the disaster of the war, people could buy a solo bike, find a honey and put her on the back. When kids came, buy a hack and they too can get transported.
BMW lightened the flywheel a few times over the years, but not so much as the 81. Each time we liked it a lot.

Wowsers! you mean it was even heavier?!
I 'spose the old guys in the machine shops would have seen it coming............
'It's all down hill from here boys, these flywheels are just getting lighter and lighter every year.
Soon no-one will be bringing flywheels to us for lightening.

Thanks for the compliment, but I really can't claim that the leak is solved just yet. I need to put some miles on her first. I would like to think it is solved, but this one has eluded me for sometime, so I am going to wait and see.
Cheers,

I had a mystery oil leak from the rear of my RS engine that sent me off on an amazing journey.
I came up with some real fanciful ideas as to where the leak was coming from and why.
GSPD's advice (god bless him) was to run the engine without the gearbox and with all the clutch removed.
What I saw dumbfounded me. The oil leak was coming from around one of the 4 bolt heads holding the oil pump cover in place.
The oil pump cover had a small fracture around the base of the bolt head counter bore in the cover plate (if that makes sense)
But...... the /5 has counter sunk screws in the cover plate doesn't it? Which would make it unlikely to be the cause in your case.........
Anyway, running without tranny and clutch will reveal all.
AND! you wanna see that baby rev without all that gear behind the motor, it's like a two stroke!

I should have done that, now that I can see through my flywheel. Thanks for sharing that. Where did GSPD go?

It's so sad when that happens.

You made a full recovery anyway.

Not me. I've only heard the rumors.
