Actually the bike had a recent (within 10,000 miles) engine rebuild at BMW Grand Rapids. It was functioning well and is a beautiful bike. I'm in the Flint, MI area, actually. A bit of a drive for me to get to the nearest "Friend of the Marque" that I'm aware of. Anyone know a good Boxer wrench in my area?

Do you belong to Airheads club? They have "dairectory" of members in your area. Might be good starting point or go to "old school" MC repair shop...they might know someone?

A recently rebuilt engine should have no trouble idling for 20 minutes. Not the best treatment but no worse than crawling through traffic for the same period in warm weather. I'm intrigued. You mentioned earlier that the engine would rotate some but then jam. So if it does rotate, how far does it go, and does it then stop suddenly, as if hitting an obstacle? With the plugs out you should be able to figure at which point of rotation it stops - stick a pencil or something in a plug hole. I'm just interested.

ps: I can't help with a local to you 'wrench' - I'm on the other side of the planet, but someone will chime in.

Moosehead, Yes, I forgot about the Airhead directory...thanks for the reminder. Airbear, In fifth gear, plugs out, I'm able to push it a foot maybe before hearing and feeling a loud metal stop. You can hear one sound, possibly a gasp of air then, bang!...and the wheel locks...forward and reverse, I can rock it about a foot or two before the Bang! I'll investigate further tonight to see if it is indeed rotating at all.

Does the ENGINE lock up or the whole drive train? (What happens if you are in neutral? ARE you able to get it in neutral?)

Jean, I did stop the motor. It was running. Yeah, it moves fine when in neutral.

Damn...what if it is a rod? I'm probably damaging things further by slamming it into whatever is stopping it. (sigh!) I learn the hard way every time.

I don't think you can break a rod while idling, the bottom ends of these engines are robust! Could it be a valve stuck and got bent? Short of tearing it all apart, I'd pull the valve covers first and check the rockers, pushrods etc to see if anything is amiss. You might be able to see any damage to the top of the piston by looking through the spark plug hole.

Tim, I was thinking that as well when looking at an exploded view of this engine. I'm checking when i get home tonight.
