Compartment for a BMW-supplied First Aid kit. Khittner's right.
I have the first aid kit...and have used it.
It's mentioned in the manual that came with the bikes that had the compartment.
I also have the little plastic box mentioned..it's for "DOCUMENTS" according to the manual.
It was suggested that you should store things inside the main frame tube, too, also accessable when the seat is opened.

My tire irons are too bent to fit into the frame top tube, darn it.
I guess I could squish them in my vice, but I don't know how well they would work if I did that.

I use the main frame tube to store "things".

We assumed that.

I agree with Konrad, there was one on my 1978 R80, which housed the first aid kit, which I think was a mandatory requirement in Germanybat the time.

When I was traveling on the R80, our stash of cash was housed inside the main tube, using a length of PVC water pipe, nowadays it contains a rolled up, laminated wiring diagram, this is go JuJu as the electrics seemed to have held together on trips.

My 1978 R80/7 had it and I have a RS single seat of unknown year which has it.

The 3/4 seat I now use has the compartment. That came on a '81 R100RS that had been put together by a guy with access to lotsa parts, so the year of the seat is unknown.

The compartment is about 8" front to back.

I have an unmolested 501 1976/7 3/4 without the stash compartment. It's my superannuation!
The 2 dual seats I have (1 used periodically, the other in bits) don't have the compartment. They're from post '81 bikes.
