Thanks Randy. It gets a 20 minute semi rural run before any adjustments are made. Then when I go to work (20-25 minutes) I would take a screwdriver with me to tweak them if needed on arrival.
The more I think about it, the more I'm leaning towards the choke mechanism. Maybe partly 'cause I've never done them before. I do have the gaskets at hand, so may do 'em anyhow...next week.

I rode it to work this arvo. It ran like I've been describing. Thought I'd try and tweak the idle when there as it does go a little below 1000rpm (I remember gspd said that was a sign of a rich setting)
Stunk of petrol...left boot wet...leaking everywhere. Anyhow, did the usual...bowl off, jiggle the float whilst running the petrol, float bowl back on. It was my right boot stinking of petrol last weekend without such a dramatic leak. Annoying really as just yesterday I'd removed the taps and flushed the tank.

It ran the same coming home, but didn't leak this time. Idle settled at just under 1000rpm, so I moved the mixture screws slightly leaner, aiming for a little over 1000rpm. I'll adjust the idle screws if required at work in the morning after another warmup ride. It was getting a bit late to continue tuning a bike..2320 here now.

Thinking about the choke gaskets, if they were a problem wouldn't it make starting harder as they allowed air into the circuit if buggered? Mine still starts easy without choke, so unlikely to be them?

Another dumb question....are you're chokes returning all the way to off?

Could they be slightly "on" on 1 if not both carbs?

Old choke gaskets have a tendancy to shrink sometimes and therefore not allowing choke disc to return all the way. Its like running with 1/4 choke on all the time. Had this happen on another bike...it was like choke was partially on all the time. Might want to check to see if closing all the way. New choke gaskets fixes that problem...

Just a thought....I'm learning something in this thread

Good thought and something I've checked. The levers do go all the way off to the stop.
I did have the carbs apart a while back and when I put the choke cables back on I was uncertain of the orientation of the brass dial that the lever and cable attach to. It needs to be correct and I double checked it at the time.
