And to answer your question, I have no experience with the Alpha ignition. Heck, even Snowbum doesn't talk about it!

This system is only a year or two old. I assume it hasn't crossed Snowbum's path yet. He does make some updates from time to time but I am not sure how many new gismos like this cross his path anymore.

This wasn't to be a discussion about a broken cam or Crank mounted ignitions.
This is about feedback regarding the Alpha Ignitions. I googled it. I searched other forums. There is only minimal feedback regarding their bean-can ignition. Nothing I can find regarding the earlier style ignition system.
Reading between the lines it sounds like you're sore that I and others chose not to stay on "your" topic. This is, indeed, the way of Boxerworks, and this laissez faire' attitude about it that you encounter appears to rankle you. If so, may I suggest to you that this propensity toward "thread degradation" does not in any way diminish the amount or quality of technical help/advice that you are getting (from here, from us). You are getting all that we are capable of giving you. Taking myself as an example, if I thought I had anything meaningful to add to your "quest" I would certainly have posted it as clearly and correctly as I am able.
I and many others see Boxerworks as providing something else that we old BMW motorcycle lovers have a "need" for, and that is social interaction. And that need we do satisfy pretty well I think. For most of us, I think, this is a need as much or more important than the exchange of technical information. And I am most grateful for Boxerworks operating just as it does.
Of course not everybody here thinks like I do, but I would expect that most of us do. One of our highly valued members here, Duane Ausherman and I appear to have an ongoing difference of opinion in philosophy regarding the Boxerworks forum. His latest posting on the subject suggests researching the internet in preference to engaging the denizens of Boxerworks on technical questions. And I typically respond in much the same way I'm posting here, saying in a sense that this is a gathering of diverse people drawn together by a common interest; that interest being old BMW motorcycles. And we, frankly, rather enjoy the BS sessions in and of themselves.
I'm not making a point that Boxerworks should be one way or the other. I do think that seekers of technical knowledge and seekers of like minded people, all of whom happen to enjoy the same kind of motorcycles that I do--can both sate our thirsts.

Holy crap. I am just trying to get my frigging question answered and this is becoming a daytime soap opera!

I've been a member of this board for 13+ years (probably since it started). I've fully aware of the humor, hijacking and advice offered on this forum.
I hold this forum responsible for my restoration addiction. I'd never get most of my questions answered without it.
I was just trying to steer the discussion back to my original question.
I am shying away from Points for various reasons. The main one being that the bike isn't for me. it is for somebody who won't get his hands too dirty. So I want a bullet proof electronic ignition.
I like the idea that this is new technology. But feedback and testing is crucial on any new technology.

Go to google and type this {site:bmwmoa.org "alpha ignition"} into the search box. You'll see several favorable posts on the MOA forum about it.
And Snowbum does try to keep up with things...he's just a busy guy, what with all the font changes, flashing letters, etc., on his website.

While this is new technology, it's made of components that are tried and true. Also, I have had great dealings with Rick over the years, so I would assume that if there was a problem he would make it right. It sounds like a good system to me...

The degradation in this thread is nothing compared to poor Ron's thread on wanting an R65.

He's married now. THAT's probably the biggest change in how he spends his time.
He and the missus were here at the college last Friday night for our improv night - probably our best one yet. He seemed to have a good time, but I don't think he got any work done on his website.

Has it been that long? Damn, time really does fly - and, damn, I really am getting old.
