Yes, those tubes are available from MaxBMW for about $17 each. I remember a discussion about fixing a leaky one many years ago on the old Boxerworks forum, but I can't remember what the fix was. Maybe Loctite makes something that will secure and fill the gaps? It's #4 on this diagram:

Back in the day I remember replacing one of those tubes. It was leaking at one end and it was a pain to do. It was our first and only, so we might have used the worse method possible. Had it been a frequent issue, we probably would have learned how to do it.

The pushrod tubes fit to the outer section of the jugs as you described, the protection tubes continue that path from the bottom face of the heads through the cooling fins to the rocker arms.
Hey Sam, MaxBMW fiche also calls the pushrod tubes "protection tubes". Take due care when ordering...
