It's hard to tell from that photo due to the low quality, but it looks like the shifter is there. The shifter looks like the ones on the R100 GS's.
I found the answer here (
http://www.bikeexif.com/bmw-r80st). From the site
The tank is from a Kawasaki KZ750, with an ingenious addition to one side: A vintage Ural suicide shift has been converted to a choke mechanism for warming up the engine when cold.
Yep. Seems a bit of a Rue Goldberg approach to choke the bike.

I agree, and it just seems so out of character with every other choice on the bike.

Choke was going to be my guess.
Not even I would have thought up that one.

You guys miss the point. These bikes don't have to work.
If it was mine, I'd have had a mirror image casting of the Ural shift made for the other side of the tank for the horn button. Or something.

I like the thing , I've always liked the trials look and that one looks good .... but I can do without the silly choke lever .
The Kwaka tank looks very neat, the paint is good ....OK excellent ! So is the brown seat and the matching hand grips .... where do you get things like that ?
I checked out the Motogadget speedo but I'd have to sell a kidney to afford one.
Did I ever mention i ride an ST ?

ST's seem to be a rare bird. Great model! I like this thing too! I'd have it looking like shit in a half hour.

Yeah, super perfect beautiful custom dirt bikes seem a little weird to me. It is pretty though.

Actually the mods to that aren't extreme so I think it's entirely usable and remains a good everyday road bike . A change of tyres would be all it would need to go from mild dirt to road .
