Fuel consumption ?

Both my R65 and my R90 are in the 40 - 45 MPG range with the R65 falling off fast above 60 MPH and the R90 falling off above 70 MPG.

I also suspect, but have never really tested, that the performance picks up at lower speeds. It would be interesting to know what the max range speed and RPM would be. It was actually in the owners manual on my 1968 Bridgstone 175 and it was something like 25 MPH in third.

That sounds about right. In cars it's usually in the 30-35 mph range, and they're much more aerodynamic than bikes.

I got stuck behind an F250 with a heavy load yesterday. I couldn't see what was in the bed, a big box, but his suspension was letting the truck wallow all over. I was in my '04 Insight, and wow I get good mpg. in 5th gear at about 40. Only mid-50s with my normal driving, at least until it warms up.

OK, mine is bad , I thought it was too so two sets of needle and seats . More money but this will pay for itself.

Yahbut the dang thing sure was expensive. It has OK power, certainly more than an airhead, but it's slow compared to the '08 R1200R I had (which also got around 50 MPG). A hell of a lot more comfortable though.

Not the needle & seats mate but the needle & needle jets, the needles are situated in the slide
below the diaphragm and the n/jets are above the main jet.

Thanks Bob, carburetters are someting on a long list of things I know nothing about . At least I can now order the right bits !

This mileage is pretty much what my two R65s -81 and 83- and my '78 R100S obtain. I used to track fuel usage and mpg but my wrist finally got the better of me so my figures would be worthless. On longer trips, I'll flight plan for 35-40 mpg just to err on the safe side. Some wise sage once said, "Motorcycle boots are not made for walking".

BTW, my bride pays more for a gallon of fancy bottled water than I do for a gallon of gas.

Yeah, but does she consume a gallon and a half an hour? If so, I'm sure you have to make enough stops to drastically decrease your gasoline consumption per hour....
