ME109...Thanks for the suggestion about the boot... I did check it and it is fine with no holes. In addition, the boot clamp was also snug. Also, once I removed the transmission, I found its front main seal had been leaking a bit as well... there was actually hardened gear lube paste (lube and clutch dust) on the front of the transmission case, from the front seal running down and into the bottom of the clutch housing of the engine and had leaked out onto the "shelf" under the rear of the engine. It doesn't look like the rear main engine seal or the oil ring for the oil pump cover has been leaking, but I will know more about that once I remove the clutch and flywheel (after blocking the crank) I am going to replace the seal and o rings anyway, since I am this far into it.

This paste hadn't contaminated the clutch...thank goodness... The first owner had been taking this 89 R100RT to a non-BMW dealer (Honda/Suzuki/Kawasaki) for service once the Linton shop closed... The second owner was a Toyota automobile dealer and apparently had one of his auto mechanics service the bike. I am the third owner and I do know how to spell Airhead. I bet one of the first two owners lost, then replaced the vent bolt with a regular bolt... No telling how many of the 34K original miles on the clock were logged with a regular bolt rather than a vent bolt in the transmission.

Interesting....
