again, thx for all the input - have a BMW mechanic coming to my house to go thru the carbs. he also mentioned that he has changed out the jets in the later models and removed the emissions stuff on these later bikes.

After you get things sorted out, probably just needs some internal cleaning, I would start using a product called Star Tron to deal with the ethanol situation. It comes in various concentrations and will condition and stabilize fuel for 2 years.
Read up on it. I also use Techtron .
