Nope, Boyer for the last 50 thousand kms. It starts easily and idles OK. I think electronic ignitions either work or fail completely, no?

btw speaking of how much you can pack, to cheer me-self up I got a new compact tent for the trip.

Nope. The two most common failures are the one you describe, and failing or missing when hot and working again when cool. A third kind of failure is much less common, but that would be just weird unpredictable behavior - not nearly as common as the other two.

Hmm thanks MS. Is there a way to test an EE unit? I guess at a pinch I could stick the points back in ....

Yeah, unfortunately, unless it's completely dead, or goes completely dead when hot, the only way I know to "test" it is to replace it with a known good unit and see if it changes the behavior. Replacing with points would pretty much be the same thing.

Well it's rolling again. I only rode around for about half an hour but couldn't provoke a miss,
went looking for the steepest hill around here, and if you know central NSW, you know that's more a gentle slope.
Still seems down on power and rough though, despite returning to base to re-balance the carbs.
Sparks are blue, but look a bit weak.
I will order new leads and stuff and see.

So Mal what do you think the problem was?
I'm just a bit curious Mate.

Regards Bob.

Gday Bob,

Not as curious as me! I think it may still be lurking. Waiting for a coil or lead or EE unit to get hot enough.
btw I have shopped around, S Meyer are most expensive for coils, 110 euro, each!

Hi,
item correct for your bike. Price is for one coil. You need 2 of the items for one bike.

Second hand monolever coil, marked Made in Slovenia. They're the go. 2:1 coil. The earlier ones are called crackomatics for a reason.
A Harley coil will also work...cheap enough. Just need the 1.5 ohms version.

There's always a Brown Dyna 1.5 ohm twin coil USD95 plus post. http://www.motoelekt.com/ignition.htm Excellent coil. I have one and Grant too!

Gidday Fella,

mal I have two new spare green dyna coils in the cupboard from http://www.motoelekt.com/ignition.htm
I also have tucked away the new Alpha Classic ignition system which I have not installed on the 78RS yet, thats another job to sort out one day.

Not quite sure of the year your bike is but if the specs suit I can post you up a brand new Motoelekt green dyna coil for the cost price as listed if you want, just fix me up at the Blue Duck..

Hope this help you out and cheers

Hey Grant, thanks for the offer. I may need it yet. Put an order in on Motobins that jammed at the last hurdle, I shoulda used paypal, who invented friggin' credit card verification steps? Got no order confirmation but I can see it sitting on my Motobins account, and with the time difference they are closed for the night.

Sigh. The bike runs. I will pack a spare makeshift lead and the old points and gear just in case, and when you'se are all asleep I will swap in some decent coils ... shhhhhh

cheers
