As you say it isn't that scary, and provided one asks
too many questions, it is quite doable.
I've just been looking for calipers and depth gauges on ebay.
Time will tell how well I did.

If it shifts good and the shafts turned free when you put it together, you won't have any problems.

Robert, a little shim reduction of approximately .02mm on all shafts, combined with your 'whack' on the input shaft made the difference from tight on assembly to loose. I'm confident that there is no excessive end play.

I always liked them a little loose. Gearboxes that is.

It seems you've mixed an early gear change mechanism with a latter switch or vice versa !
You may be able to get the proper switch if you know the part number of the wrong one.

I'll test the switch from Ducatipete's tranny (which worked properly) and my old switch and test what does what with the multimeter.
The gear change mechanism is the original....the switch (3 switches ago) used to work.

As a matter of fact, I've just bought four complete sets of rockers from ebay and I intend to find out why there is a persistent tick from the right cylinder. Valves set, end play sweet. It almost sounds like a timing chain rattle by the way the rattle is influenced by rpm and load. But I put a new chain on a while ago so I don't think that's it.
Plus the rh side cylinder base is weeping a little from using Permatex high temp silicone some time ago.
Plus, I've revved the tits off the RS for quite a while now sow a looky see is in order.
The lh side has threebond and is as dry as a bone.

Sounds like a loose valve seat. Have you peen in there lately?

The gear change mechanism in my 81 RS has to push the neutral switch 'in' to make contact.
It is an early type change mechanism but that doesn't explain why there is an early, early <76? shift cam in there.
Strange.
It needs the pre 76 neutral switch.
No wonder the last two switches have not worked. WTF?
