I wished I had Vanzen. In fact, I let the (up and running) little project just sputter away. After a few months of driving on two cylinders around town (my only car at the time), I pulled the engine and put in a near stock 1600cc engine. I played a bit with the 1600 engine with changing the dual port heads with single port and a smaller carb. This did drop performance but upped the gas mileage about ten percent. I added a simple homemade water 'injector' which added a couple more klics on the mileage plus a touch more performance.

What happened to the little two cylinder engine?.....I eventually bought another car (an old 220 Mercedes). The 1600 engine expired after many ten k's of use. I converted the two cylinder back to four, put it back in the car, and sold it for a few hundred bucks. Always love those VW engines and think I could still overhaul an engine blindfolded. They were real easy to hot-rod, relativity speaking, since they seemed to be de-tuned to start with.

After that project back in 1980, some years later, the little Geo Metro came out. The LSI model had a EPA rating of 60 mpg. I bought one and drove it for about 10 years. It did deliver near 60 on the highway and was a great running little car. Had a lot more pep than one would expect. Would like to have another one for daily commuting.
I wish they still made them. Surely, there'd be a market for such a high fuel mileage car as that Metro was.
