ANY quality brand name oil that meets factory viscosity & SAE specs will be the bottom line.
Having said that, I use synthetic in every bike that I own,
prefer 4-stroke, air-cooled motorcycle specific formulations for the engine,
and use synthetic gear lube in the trans, shaft, and final-drive.
Are there problems with using synthetics in a BMW MC ?
NO !
Qualified only by the premise that you are putting that oil into a tight engine,
and that your oil choice meets factory viscosity & SAE specs.

Often while on the road, even within N. America,
I find myself topping off with a mineral oil.
Not a problem to do so, but ...
Just try to find Golden Spectro or Amsoil in a gasoline / convenience store, eh ?

However, if I were planning to trip extensively through Central & South America,
my #1 concern and priority that would determine my oil choices for that trip
would be availability of product.
I'd want to start out with whatever will be easily procured enroute.

Same goes for an engine that will run well on readily available octane.
