I was riding a 1951 Matchless in 1970. Without indicators one was required to give a hand signal. This is Australia where we ride on the left hand side of the road, therefore we used our right hand to signal. Simple, huh?

I seem to remember signalling a right hand turn in fast traffic was fun .....cos you took you hand off the throttle and slowed instantly .You tend to put off signalling til the last moment .

A mate used to be a tram driver in Melbourne ,he explained the joys of soon to be dead drivers pulling to the centre of the road to do a right hand turn. 30 ton of tram is hard to stop.

Now that's encouraging...think I'll try and avoid the situation if at all possible...I'll just "Nod" to the tram driver with appropriate head salute and pray he'll not run us over...

The saddest wave is to an airhead going the other way that doesn't even register what I'm riding. Bloody commuter.

The more interested I am in a passing bike, the more effort put in to salutations.
Do we wave at the bike or the rider? I forget.

I nod more than wave because it takes a rather enthusiastic effort to wave above the rs fairing.

When passing harleys, (both ways) instead of waving I take a brief moment to 'consider' the plight of the harley rider versus the big fat christmas beetles, cicadas, any other beetle, bees, rain, locusts, stones, flap jaw etc.
Cracks me up every time.
