My 20 year old steel MB has 18 speeds and I use every one !
The cycle computers can be helpful if one is training for something or has a specific goal such as a certain amount of miles in a given time. I don't have any of those needs and therefore leave off the gadget. If I ride with someone who has one, I'm curious as to the quantities, so I do get why people use them. If it made my ride more fun, I'd have one.

I too, use all the gears on my bikes. It is funny that it doesn't matter much to me how many I have. I've always said "Give me a low enough gear, a high enough gear and a few in between, and I'm happy".

When people come to me with their gear ratios all charted out, I say that I'm not getting involved in that. Just tell me what you want to do and I'll tell you if I can make it work. There are some things I can't relate to, obviously. For instance, I'm pretty much lost when people ask me "What year is that"? I can tell you if I think it's a good frame or part but the year doesn't seem important so I don't think in those terms. The irony for me there, is that nowadays I'm dealing with "vintage bikes" and in that market, the year is important.

Why do I have a cycle computer ? I like to compete ,not against others but against myself . How long did it take me , how fast can I go on this stretch ,trip time for a particular circuit ? I enjoy it !! I always have . :D :D

I like to compete against myself too Sibbo, I've no choice -- everyone else cycles considerably faster than I do.
But I never lose a race, somehow, it's always a draw.
I wish I had multiple personality disorder -- I do love a party.

Funny thing is that if I rode with you, I'd try to keep up. I'd also probably ask how far we had gone, but it still wouldn't have me putting on a meter. I think they're great and you have a perfectly legitimate reason for using one.

Funny thing is, when they came out, they were pretty big and very expensive. I remember the first ones.

Or for that matter, a manual window that just wouldn't stay up. I had '67 Mustang in the mid 80's, and the damn windows would not stay up. The regulators needed to be replaced, and I didn't have the where-with-all to buy and replace them. There's nothing wrong with technology, but then again, there's nothing wrong with simplicity either as long as they're designed well. Now when something's poorly designed, it's junk whether it's state of the art or old school.

On bicycles? Never heard of it.

Just kidding. But it's still pretty funny. Anyway, I'm not fast. Not even close. If I had the chance to ride with any of you, I'd try to keep up, or if I was faster, I'd ride at your pace. The camaraderie would be so much nicer than trying to be the faster one. And, we'd have to stop and eat. At least once, maybe twice. And talk. That's where the fun is. I ride for fun.
