Someone, I think Rob Farmer, rigged up a O2 meter so he could check the mixture on while running the bike on the road.
He found that the flat filter didnt flow enough at high revs, and reverted to the round filter, which he found did.
I found I got more power everywhere and a livelier motor by just removing both the intake stubs from the flat air box, on my R100GS which has 40mm carbs and a ,err, free flowing exhaust
But others report the opposite, so go figure.
I bought a pair of Mikunis which had been fitted and tuned by one of the English tuners, and instead of rubber intake hose he had used some form of rubber adaptor, which placed the carb about 1/4" back from the intake stub, with a stepless intake track. I found the rubber adaptors alone were a noticable improvement from either a short hose with the carb almost touching the stub, or setting the carb back the same distance using a longer hose, which of course resulted in a step in the tract.
This was on a 32mm carbed, twin plugged 1000 cc R80 G/S which still had a full Staintune G/S exhaust system with a crossover and the small collector, a flat air box without stubs , a Uni filter, and the late type stiff slide springs in the carbs.
For racing I would imagine one of the main advantages of the pod type set up is the freedom you have with both the distance of the carb from the head, and of the length of the velocity stack, as I would imaging big valve high comp head, and a racing exhaust and cam might work best something different to the stock set up.

I have been thinking about that very thing. I have the step in the intake track and have been thinking of ways to make the intake track from carburetor to head smooth with no step. Can you snap a pic of your set up and post? I have also wondered what effect increasing the intake length from carb to head would have.I realize the track should be smooth as possible, (as I understand it, adding turbulence to intake reduces efficiency). Machining an aluminum ring to fit in between head and carburetor so there is no step is what I was thinking. Maybe something better?

That is SO wrong. If that was true, then this device wouldn't be the wonderful miracle that it is!
What is TORNADO?
TORNADO is a non-moving turbine shaped device, which creates a vortex or swirling effect to the engine. The result is improved airflow into the engine combustion chamber, causing a more efficient mixture between air and fuel.
Payback
A TORNADO unit, properly installed, can easily pay for iself in less than six months*.
Bottom Line Proven Value with TORNADO Under The Hood
TORNADO keeps on paying for itself as long as you own your vehicle.

10% mileage improvements are very common. This proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that turbulence in the intake tract is, in fact, a great efficiency booster.

MS,
If I put 10 of those on either side I'll get 100% fuel economy increase?!, where did I put that Credit Card!

I've kind of thought that Tornado Air and the like are snake oil.

YES!!!! While I can see the benefit of creating a better air/fuel mixture, a 10% improvement seemed a bit like snake oil to my extremely limited understanding of engines. If such a relatively cheap product were to create such a result, I would have thought that some of the auto manufacturers would be using them. Perhaps they are and I don't know about. Plus there's been a lot of snake oil products claiming to improve this or that with regards to performance. Anyway, that's my $0.02 on the matter. BTW, do you have this product installed in any of your vehicles?

Sorry, Jeff; I'll help you out here. As Unclviny clearly recognized, my post was totally tongue-in-cheek. Sorry if it wasn't obvious enough.
You are quite right, it is total snake oil.
