I second that, had a similar problem when running too short plug wires. The wind at higher speeds was pulling the wire out of the coil. That's what the funny shaped rubber thingy under the tank is for, dontcha know? BTW, aren't ALL ignitions electronic? (just sayin')teo wrote:And your plugs, plug caps, and wires are all good, right? Hmmmmm, excellent question. Certainly, every electronic ignition has a mechanical component to identify timing. Even if it is an electronic sensor, part of it is mechanically rotating to identify crank and/or cam position. The hybrid "bean can" system is very mechanical for an "electronic" ignition. Still, advance mechanisms can be purely mechanical or purely electronic.

Thanks for the suggestions chaps, I'm away from home at the mo so not much testing going on.
I usually only run premium fuel and get it from many outlets.
Plugs aren't old but are on my suspicions list with plug leads.
I'll play with float levels to confirm........

Jeff, if the timing seems OK and the float levels are spot on, one cause of breakdown at higher revs could be needles and needle jets. I replaced 'em on the 80G/S and the RS and it improved top end running (and fuel consumption! ) heaps. Overfueling at high revs and the subsequent 'blubbering' that can occur can be mistaken for an ignition glitch. If you haven't replaced yours, don't be surprised to see the needle jet flogged out oval!!! Coils? High tension leads? Crap in the main jet?

You may just have it Hools, I would certainly have worn needle jets.
So many times I've thought about buying new ones, dya think I can remember!!
I replaced the needles about 3 years ago but wasn't particularly in the know about the needle jets.
I have written them on tomorrows 'to do' list.........
SteveD helped me to buy my first thing (airhead of course) on ebay a few weeks back..............
I'm up to 26 items now!!! Somebody stop me!
