Now THAT'S a gap!
I'm thinking a 2x4 would make a fine feeler gauge for that.

I'm thinking the lad needs some help.
Foot, 38mm is over an INCH!
PLEASE, read Tim's instruction again and give it another try.

That's correct, ignore the naysayers...

Now your timing is too far advanced, but at least we are in the ballpark. Turn the points plate all the way clockwise and see where the light comes on. I'm betting the correct setting is somewhere in between.

Tim, with s mark at the line and baseplate turned clockwise to the max the light is on. With s mark on the line the light stays on at any position.
I whent ahead and removed timing chain cover to check the timing marks they appear to be matched. I'm thinkin Ill replace timing chain and go from there. It must be the original chain ( no master link ). Can old chain be cut off ? Any tips would be appreciated. Thank you to all who contributed

I'm thinking just a worn timing chain couldn't cause the discrepancies you've been seeing. Erratic timing, yes.

Could these be the points with the excessively tall rubbing block?
OP says "recently acquired." Perhaps the PO installed some bogus points?
Otherwise, I'd wonder if the flywheel was on the correct index. Has TDC been verified?

The points I have now look just like the points I took out.
TDC verified, yes.
