I think I would be more worried about the damage done to the rest of the mechanism than the source of the lump of metal...

Yes of course, but as a matter of interest...especially as this busted trans doesn't need a quick repair. I have a spare.

Hmmm, I don't think a piece of round kicker spring could be flattened like that?

I was looking at the diagram to try and understand what piece it might be? No conclusion from that exercise. The lever does move more freely is all I'm saying! ;)

Found it! Front bearing on the output shaft, with some gear surface damage to 5th gear and adjacent one on the intermediate shaft.

Ouch! Not a happy outcome but not, I would suggest, totally unexpected. No cigars to anyone for guessing that one.

Actually Rob Frankham was correct. It was all academic until you removed and opened up the trans. And there was collateral damage.
But all this reminds me of an episode of Car Talk (NPR show out of Boston) where it was postulated that:
"two people who don't know what they are talking about know more or less than one person who doesn't know what he's talking about?"
