Agreed, however it will be even less original if I replace it with anything else.
I was very fortunate to be able to talk to the second owner who is still alive. He bought it in 1975 and had the original seat base recovered with the the seat in the picture. So, although not a factory original covering, the seat is of the period and forms an important part of its provenance.
And it’s incredibly comfortable!

Soft is not necessarily more comfortable. It may seem that way at first. The most comfortable seats for long distance usually feel firm at first.
That bike deserves a proper seat.
Since you have the original pan you can return to it's proper form quite affordably.
Then it would be a correct original classic R75/5.
If you were walking around with your zipper down, wouldn't you want your friends to let you know?

I think we’ll have to agree to disagree on this one.
As I have said before, the bike has a nice history and the previous owner from 1975 to 1985 has provided a number of written accounts of long trips on the bike with his wife on pillion (I guess the seat cannot be that uncomfortable on long journeys). As such, if I remove the seat and recover it with something that has most likely emanated from China, all of that history will be gone and although the bike might now look original, it will in reality be as original as those dodgy Rolex watches that are also made in China.
I think the bike deserves to maintain its history rather than to strive to make it look like every other R75/5 in existence. It is unique and the seat is part of that; it tells a story.
