I would think it would take a lot to distort the length-wise dimension of the filter given the center tube. Shouldn't the filter construction prevent axial pressure distorting the pleats ?

I agree that should be the case ... if the filter was properly constructed.
On the other hand if the end caps are not a tightly secured to the filter tube and are able to slide on axial pressure. The bonded rubber end rings these days don't have much give in them to absorb movement.
