That is a good point, that MH said he had offered to pay for Duane's services. It has been quite a while since I read the story and I wrote what I did from what I remembered. Erroneously, I mixed in some feelings/experiences of mine and that did make what I wrote misleading.

By the way, I think MH is a great writer. He is at least on par with Peter Egan.

Duane says he doesn't remember the conversation. I know I've had a few instances where a customer's approach sends up a red flag. In those instances, I'm sure I could be considered unreasonable. Most of those times, I've seen that I was glad I went with my instincts. A few times, I have wished I had not.

Thanks for pointing that out.

There is something that has intrigued me about this story that I haven't been able to convey yet. What sparked me to write my post about that story is the contrast of two personalities (as I perceive them). I see Duane's approach to things as very pragmatic, practical, cut and dried. Maynard, to me, seems much more of a person who approaches things based on his feelings. I hope this doesn't sound like nonsense to anyone reading it. The thought occurred to me that that disparity could have contributed to the problem between them. It has happened to me. My approach is more in the "Duane camp." It is a wonder that my wife and I get along as well as we do.

I find Egan quite lame.

Actually, I have found him irrelevant and uninteresting lately as well.

I am sure that they both write better than I do.

I bought used parts from Kari and Cali. BMW back in the 80's when I was building my conversion rig. He was known even as far east as Indiana! I suspect he may have even advertised in the MOA magazine.

Cycle World was my last hold-out on printed m/c magazines - only to read Egan.
After a while it wasn't even worth that. No more magazines of any kind clogging up my mailbox and recycle tub these days.

There's always something good in The New Yorker. Also, I don't get this mag but if I ever see the offer of one dollar an issue again, I'll sign up for sure..........Playboy. It's worth a dollar an issue for sure. Honestly, I find the pictures of the young women tedious. The interviews and articles are sometimes very good. I have some old ones that just turned up in the attic. They have articles by Duane's friend Craig Vetter. Very interesting.

Also, I'd like to subscribe to Rolling Stone.

The Craig Vetter of Playboy is different from the one of Windjammer fame. At Windjammer's Craig Vetter, the (30th) incredible birthday party, I met the "other" Craig Vetter. As far as I know, that is the only time that they met.

I think I understood Duane's original post about not caring that much about motorcycles in much the same way that ZM did. (And apparently just as incorrectly, but it was written that way.) I guess my understanding was helped along by projection, as I'm not really a motorcycle junky either. I like riding, but I'm mostly interested in two motorcycles, my Bonneville and my R65. To my brother riding is some kind of therapy. To me it's a means of transportation that I enjoy, but I don't do it just for the heck of it. I have a couple of friends who are walking motorcycle encyclopedias and get all of the magazines but I don't. Just Airmail and Vintage Bike which has artlcles about Triumphs.

Nice.... I hope there are at least screens over the carb mouths. I have a tank and parcel rack like that for mine but it's still in primer.
