When someone asks a question about high performance cams on the forum, they usually get answered by those who know the answers or think they do. Maybe it will come to pass that they will be asked why they need a performance cam when stock ones work just fine. I haven't seen that as being the way things transpire around here.

I was sarcastic to a question that I read as sarcastic. I am grateful for the help that has been given here and hope to find out what's making the relay buzz.

I may have been sarcastic, it was so long ago I don't remember now. Even if I was sarcastic, I was serious. With all the trouble LED turn signals invariably bring, why are incandescent turn signals not satisfactory for you?

Yeah, thats what I SHOULDA said!

Here's the latest for anyone that it helps and hopefully, for anyone who is trying to help me figure this out.

My friend said to put a jumper wire between the green/black and green/yellow wires on the flasher relay terminal block. With the ignition, that will tell if there is a fault in the turn signals. It should light them up (but they won't flash) if everything is wired up OK. It lit up perfectly. Also, the multi LED rear turn signals lit up fully. I am waiting on the three prong relay I bought on ebay.

Does this make the problem easier or harder to understand? And no, not the problem of why ain't I using incandescents.

Re: This is discouraging

Post by Chuey »

The relay came in the mail yesterday so I installed it this morning and it does nothing. It is as if it is not there. No signal lights come on at all. I'm pretty discouraged. With the first (two pin) relay I bought, the lights come closest to working correctly. The only thing that is not right when that relay is in, is that the one pair of turn signals lights up but only at about one third intensity. That is the set of lights that has multiple LEDs.

When I was on ebay, looking for the relay, I bought a cheap set of multiple LED tail lights to use as a comparison with the ones I have that don't work. When they get here, I'll install them and report back.

OK, from China, via ebay came a three prong LED relay. When I plugged it into the receptacle in the headlight bucket.....nothing.

My friend told me to not get discouraged and to check the order in which the wires hooked up to the relay, which is not a BMW part. He told me which wire to hook up to the respective terminals. I made jumper wires so I didn't have to change them in the bakelite receptacle.

Now all the LEDs come on in my turn signals that flank the license plate. The other signal lights had had no problems and are still working fine. So, now I've got turn signal lights that will beat a stock set-up for conspicuity.

Soon, the Cafe' will rumble to life and take me to Palomar Mountain with gusto.

If it's before early December, I'd love to meet you up there for a ride...I'm not too far away and need to stretch the legs on my "improved" /6 before I head back out on deployment.

THERE! Take that Mr. Negative /5!

So, are you going to post a synopsis of what it took to get it all to work, so I don't have to go thru that?

Oh yeah, and pictures, too. :D

Do you mean pictures of electrical connectors? Or do you mean pictures of tenni128 and me up at Palomar on our bikes?

tenni128, I think the bike could be back together within a few days but this week's days off will unfortunately be taken up with preparation for a colonoscopy. That should be some fun!

If the weather is good, the week after that may work out. I'm afraid to go up to Palomar on Sunday, so I have only gone on Mondays. Would a Monday work out for you?
