Another question Charles, do you recall if the groove was just machined wider to fit the new ring, or was it also made deeper as well? It's the last thing we need to do to get my friends R100/7 back on the road!

I think that the groove was not deepened, I would machine it wider to take the plastic ring and then fit. On my bike it's a fairly loose fit, the ring not compressed much.

Ok, so probably a dumb question: So why not decrease the width of the new plastic ring? I have to believe that would require less machining than the steel damper rods. Maybe even use abrasive paper on a sheet of glass for the plastic.

I think the plastic (nylon?) rings are wider because they will wear faster than the thinner steel rings.
