I think that you got the wrong coil. Don't run it without a path to ground, or you will cause the coil to arc internally. That won't have a good outcome.

I spent 3 hours today trying to get the dyna 3 dialed in. The adjustment for the individual sensors are a joke. They need a screwdriver slot similar to the points plate, or a set screw to make fine adjustments. I would over shoot adjust one direction, then the other. Also on a test drive it died out. Luckily I was only 8 blocks away. It looked like the washers on the 2 sensors, were hitting the donut and knocked it loose. I have yanked this POS and put the old points plate back in, and am riding around now.

Glad to meet'cha duantro. Seems like us Dyna III haters are a minority here.

Being stranded twice by my Dyna III put me over the edge. Luckily the last time it happened I was stranded in my shop. But that's not the point, is it? On that second time I'm convinced the Dyna thought I was miles from home, yet again, in 90 degree plus temperature with the sun beating down unbearably on my unprotected head. (too hot to wear the helmet)

Points are good. They and a capacitor (condenser) are easy to stow. Throw in a couple fuses, a spare bulb or two, an alternator rotor, a diode board, and a known good spare transmission and you're good to go practically anywhere.

I really want to like the dyna3 and the concept of better performance, but this setup just seems cheap and finicky. The fact that the rotor magnet set screws tighten on the camshaft point lobes, and aren't contoured to mate smoothly, seems suspect. If one gets slightly loose, then the other screw slides down the points lobe. I suppose loctite would help if you ever get it adjusted correctly.

The cam is hardened and a set screw may not hold well.

My P.O.S. Dyna III experience was 5 or more years ago. I gather that Dyna hasn't improved a damned thing in the meantime.
