Shotgun pattern would be too tight at 10ft....perhaps 25ft with deer slugs?? 
PS: I drilled from the front with block of wood behind. Think I used a 1" holesaw. Took about ten minutes. Took longer to think up some stupid, logical pattern and lay it out. I like the randomness of the shotgun approach.
