That guy is really good, as good as the women at BMW were. Far better than I ever was.

One year, 1981, every major motorcycle manufacturer had at least one model with pin stripes.

I wonder what he used to mark the position of the stripes that was then OK to paint over and also how were those guidelines applied. Maybe they have a template.

Looks to me like the inside of your fuel cap is missing more than a gasket.

Yes, it needs the gasket, spring, rivet and originally came with a piece of rubber tubing "captured" by the spring.

Looks like the spring isn't shown in that picture (or the rubber tubing). #6 gasket is held in place by the #4 and #5 rivet and washer, but can move up and down on the post in the cap. The spring is above #6 and surrounds the post, keeping the gasket under pressure.

BMW used a template around which they would draw on the tank with chalk. If you check a really low mileage bike, you can see the chalk dust in the paint.
